What Does It Mean to Obey God in the Everyday?
Obedience to God can sometimes feel like a big, daunting task, especially when we think about the grand moments where we’re called to make life-changing decisions. But what if I told you that obedience to God isn’t just about those big, monumental moments, it’s also about the little, everyday choices we make? In fact, it’s in the everyday moments that we have the greatest opportunity to honor God and follow His will.
As a wife, a mother, and a woman of faith, I’ve realized that obedience isn’t just about following rules—it’s about walking in trust, listening to God, and letting Him guide my actions, even in the smallest of things. When we make the decision to obey God in the everyday, we start to see His presence in every part of our lives, and we learn to reflect His love and grace in everything we do.
Obeying God in the small moments of life might seem insignificant, but it’s in those moments that we build our relationship with Him. Whether it’s choosing to speak kindly to someone who has hurt us, offering a word of encouragement, or simply choosing patience when we’re feeling overwhelmed, each of these small acts are powerful opportunities to honor God. Obedience isn’t just about the big acts of faith; it’s about the little ways we choose to live in alignment with His heart, day by day.
One of the most important aspects of obeying God is doing so with the right attitude. It’s easy to think of obedience as simply doing what we’re told, but God is more concerned with our hearts. When we serve others, whether at home or at work, God calls us to do so with joy, not out of obligation. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, we’re reminded that God loves a cheerful giver. This goes beyond giving money or material things, it applies to how we serve and love others. When we obey Him with a joyful heart, we reflect His love and grace to the world around us.
Obeying God also means living out our faith in the work that we do, no matter how big or small the task may seem. It’s easy to think that our work—whether at home, in our jobs, or in other roles—might not be significant, but God sees it all. Colossians 3:23 tells us that whatever we do, we should do it with all our heart, as working for the Lord. When I’m folding laundry, answering emails, or taking care of my family, I remind myself that these tasks can honor God too. It’s about working with excellence and a heart that is focused on serving Him, not for our own glory but for His.
Our relationships also provide countless opportunities to obey God. Whether it’s showing patience to our children, offering forgiveness to a friend, or supporting our spouse, these moments require us to choose God’s way over our own. Obeying God in relationships means loving others as He loves us—unconditionally, with kindness, and with grace. I’ve learned that obedience in relationships isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being present and choosing to love and serve, even when it’s hard.
Obeying God in the everyday isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. It’s about being willing to listen to His voice, follow His guidance, and trust that He is with us in each moment. The more we obey Him in the small things, the more we grow in our faith and our relationship with Him. And in turn, those small acts of obedience add up to a life that is honoring to God.
Lord, thank You for Your love and for guiding me each day. Help me to obey You in the everyday moments, in both the big and small decisions. Give me a heart that is willing to listen to Your voice and follow Your lead, no matter how simple or difficult the task may seem. Teach me to obey with joy and gratitude, and help me to reflect Your love in all I do.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
