More of Him, Less of Me: Learning to Let Christ Take the Lead
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
This verse from John the Baptist holds a truth that speaks directly to our hearts. It’s a reminder to let go of ourselves, our pride, plans, and need for control, and let God lead. But that’s not always easy, is it?
In a culture that celebrates ambition, personal achievement, and self-promotion, choosing to live a life that points to Jesus can feel completely out of sync with the messages we hear every day. Yet, as believers, this is the life we are called to, a life where God’s glory takes center stage instead of our own.
Letting Christ increase in our lives isn’t about losing who we are; it’s about becoming who we were meant to be. It starts by shifting our focus. When we anchor our identity in Him, we’re no longer tied to what others think of us or even what we think of ourselves. Instead, we’re free to live for His purpose.
It’s in the small, everyday moments where this happens. It’s choosing to pray instead of worrying, to forgive instead of holding grudges, or to serve without expecting recognition. It’s surrendering what we want and trusting that God’s plans are always better.
Decreasing doesn’t mean we become insignificant. It means we’re stepping back so God can shine through us. When we let Him lead, we find freedom and joy that can only come from His presence.
John the Baptist didn’t fight to hold onto his role when Jesus’ ministry began to grow. He found joy in fulfilling his purpose and stepping aside for something greater. That’s the kind of surrender we’re invited into, one where we trust that God’s story is better than anything we could write ourselves.
So how do we live out this call to “more of Him, less of me”?
Start your day with prayer. Ask God to guide your heart and remind you that He’s the center of your life.
Practice gratitude and humility. Recognize how God is working in your life and look for ways to serve others.
Surrender your plans. Let go of striving and trust that His timing and will are perfect, even when it’s hard to understand.
Point others to Jesus. In your words, actions, and even your successes, make it your goal to reflect His love and goodness.
When we live with less of ourselves and more of Him, we find peace and fulfillment that can only come from walking closely with God. Let’s choose to decrease, not because we have to, but because His love is worth it.
Lord, I want to decrease so You can increase in my life. Help me to let go of my pride, my fears, and my desire for control. Teach me to trust You fully and to live in a way that glorifies You. Fill me with Your peace as I surrender my plans and make more room for You. May my words and actions reflect Your love so that others are drawn closer to You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
