God Never Calls Us Where He Hasn’t Prepared Us

Change is never easy, especially for someone like me, who tends to overthink and let anxiety creep in. When things shift unexpectedly, my mind instantly jumps to questions like: Can I really do this? What if I fail? What if I make a mess of things? The unknown is terrifying, but deep down, I know that God never opens a door He hasn’t already prepared me to walk through.

Recently, I found myself facing an unexpected change in my career. I was no longer in the position I had grown familiar with, and instead, I was stepping into something new, something I wasn’t sure I was qualified for. The mix of nerves and excitement was real. But as I processed everything, I kept coming back to this truth: If God brings you to it, He will equip you for it. He never calls us into something without also giving us the strength and wisdom to walk through it.

I think about Moses in Exodus 4. When God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses immediately doubted himself: "Who am I that I should go?" He listed all the reasons why he wasn’t the right person for the job—he wasn’t eloquent, he was afraid, and he was sure he would fail. But God didn’t choose Moses because he was the most talented speaker or the most qualified leader. He chose him because He had a plan. And that’s exactly how God works in our lives, too.

I also I think about Joshua, who was given the responsibility of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land after Moses’ death. That had to feel terrifying. But God reassured him over and over again, saying, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) I have found comfort in this verse as it is reminding me that I am never walking alone.

Change stretches us, but it also grows us. It’s in the moments of uncertainty that we lean on God the most, and that’s where our faith strengthens. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, I’m learning to shift my focus to what could go right. God’s plans are always greater than my own, and if He’s leading me into something new, I can trust that He will provide everything I need along the way. The fear of change doesn’t get to have the final say. Faith does.

So, if you’re standing at the edge of something unfamiliar, feeling the weight of doubt or fear, know this: God doesn’t make mistakes. He isn’t careless with the doors He opens. If He’s brought you here, it’s because He knows you are ready, even if you don’t feel like it. His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and He is faithful to equip those He calls.

Lord, change is scary. My mind fills with doubt, and my heart wrestles with fear. But I don’t want to let uncertainty keep me from stepping into what You have planned for me. Help me to trust You more, to lean on You instead of my own understanding, and to walk boldly through the doors You open. I know You have prepared me for this moment, and I choose to believe that Your plans are good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
