Finding Joy in the Holiday Season
November is here, and you know what that means, it’s the start of the holiday season! Whether your heart feels a thrill at the thought of it, or you’re dreading all that comes with this time of year, I want you to know there is joy waiting for us in every season.
The decorations are slowly making their way into store aisles, the leaves are changing, and there’s a crispness in the air that feels like a gentle nudge, reminding us that the holidays are near. There’s a lot to love, but there’s also a lot that can feel overwhelming. Maybe you’re already thinking of the to-do lists, or maybe this season brings up hard memories. Wherever you find yourself as we step into this season, let’s remember that God’s joy is always available to us, even in the simplest, most ordinary moments.
1. Finding Peace in the Busy Moments
If I’ve learned anything, it’s that God meets us right where we are. When we’re in the thick of things and stress starts creeping in, His peace is waiting. I love the reminder in Philippians 4:7: "The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." This peace doesn’t depend on things going perfectly—it’s available to us even when everything feels out of place. Just taking a breath and whispering a prayer can help reset our hearts and calm our spirits.
2. Keeping a Grateful Heart
There’s something about gratitude that changes the way we see things. Especially as Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a perfect time to pause and notice the little things, the blessings that might get overshadowed by all the busyness. Whether it’s a kind word, a quiet moment, or even a warm cup of coffee, God’s blessings are woven through our days. Gratitude helps us see those little gifts, and it turns our hearts back to the One who loves us so deeply.
3. Embracing the Imperfections
Let’s face it: the holidays almost never go exactly as planned. But that’s okay. I’ve found that some of the best memories are made in the unplanned moments, in the little mishaps and imperfections. We don’t have to strive for perfection—our families just want us, and that’s a freeing thought. Letting go of the “perfect holiday” image opens us up to experience the real beauty in each moment.
4. Being Present in the Moment
I know how tempting it is to get caught up in what’s coming next, but it’s so important to be fully present. Just soaking in the laughter, the warmth, the food, and the little faces around the table. Each day of this season holds something precious, and when we slow down to really see it, we can feel the joy that’s right in front of us.
5. Giving in Simple Ways
It doesn’t have to be big or grand to matter, sometimes the simplest acts of kindness leave the deepest impact. Whether it’s sharing a meal, offering a prayer, or writing a note, every act of love shines God’s light. Giving reminds us of the heart of this season and fills us with a joy that only comes when we reach beyond ourselves.
6. Leaning on God’s Love Through it All
At the heart of it all, we have the love of a faithful Father. Through every season and every challenge, His love never wavers. Whatever this season holds for you—whether it’s joy or heartache or somewhere in between, you’re held in His hands. Lean into that love. Remember that His presence is the greatest gift we’ll ever have, and that’s what makes each season special.
So as November begins and the holiday season unfolds, let’s embrace it with open hearts. Let’s find joy in the little moments, the ones that often go unnoticed. This season is a gift, and each day is an opportunity to experience His peace and love.
Faither, as we enter this holiday season, help us to see the beauty and joy You’ve placed in every day. Give us peace in the busyness and gratitude in the small moments. May we share Your love with everyone around us and find comfort in knowing that You walk with us through every season.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
